The format

What the Houlihan Lokey HireVue actually looks like

3-5 (CF/FVA) up to 5-6 (FR) recorded questions, 30 seconds prep and 90-120 seconds per answer, no retakes. Structure with STAR and look at the lens.

Prep timer

Exactly 30 seconds of prep per question (camera off).

Recording

90-120 seconds to record; you can stop early. Aim for 70-80 seconds.

Scoring

A hybrid framework: HireVue NLP scans transcripts for technical keywords, structure and vocabulary depth, then HR teams and designated junior bankers review the top-scoring clips for nuance, delivery and executive presence.

Invitation timing. The HireVue follows the Suited online assessment, about 1 week after a successful OA, and screens thousands before any human interviewer joins a call.

Completion window. A hard 48-72 hour window from the automated invitation email; extensions are rarely granted absent a documented emergency.

Retake policy. Zero retakes. A strict one-and-done policy: once a recording begins it is locked and uploaded.

Volume context. Roughly 60-70% of raw applicants who pass the automated resume scan get the HireVue; about 15-20% of completers advance, and ultimately only ~2-3% of all applicants get an offer.

Recent changes. A hybrid framework: the traditional recording is often paired with a cognitive/psychometric game layer and light applied technical scenarios, so candidates think on their feet rather than reciting scripts.

Question categories

What Houlihan Lokey actually asks, by category

The HireVue rotates across distinct question types. For each, what the firm is screening for, plus a weak answer signal and a strong one drawn from past applicant accounts.

Motivation

Generic bulge-bracket answers fail. They want proof you know the pure-advisory model, the middle-market dominance and the world-leading restructuring franchise.

Why do you want to build your career at Houlihan Lokey rather than at a bulge bracket or a pure-play advisory boutique?

What they test. Specific, researched motivation and market positioning

Weak answer. It is a top investment bank that works on huge global deals, and I want to learn modeling from the best people on Wall Street.

Strong answer. I am drawn to the Restructuring practice because of its unique position advising both debtors and creditors on complex balance-sheet engineering. With rates restrictive, working on liability management and out-of-court exchanges at the market-leading firm offers an unmatched technical foundation.

What attracts you to our Financial Restructuring Group, and how do current cycles affect our pipeline?

What they test. Understanding of the counter-cyclical model

Which of our industry coverage groups interests you most, and what trends are driving M&A there today?

What they test. Sector-specific commercial awareness

Behavioral / competency

Assesses execution, resilience and teamwork on lean deal teams; high EQ and reliability matter.

Tell me about a time you worked on a team where a member failed to pull their weight. How did you handle it?

What they test. Conflict resolution and delegation

Weak answer. I just did all of it myself overnight because I wanted an A, and we got the highest grade.

Strong answer. When a teammate fell behind on the model due to weak Excel skills, I broke the task into modules, reallocated the qualitative research to them while I handled the DCF, and we hit the deadline by playing to strengths.

Describe a time you made a mistake in a quantitative setting. How did you identify and rectify it?

What they test. Accountability and remediation

Resume walkthrough

Synthesize your background into a cohesive 90-second narrative, not a bullet recitation.

Walk me through your resume, highlighting the inflection points that led you to Houlihan Lokey.

What they test. Narrative thread and executive presence

Strong answer. A tight story from university and major, through a defining finance experience, to why advisory and live transactions, positioning HL as the logical next step.

Commercial awareness

Especially important for FR; they want genuine students of the markets and the credit cycle.

Identify a major corporate restructuring or bankruptcy from the past 12 months. What drove the distress?

What they test. Credit-cycle awareness

Weak answer. I would buy Nvidia because AI is growing fast and everyone needs chips.

Strong answer. I have been tracking a retailer whose capital structure became unsustainable from heavy floating-rate SOFR debt plus margin compression, with an upcoming maturity wall it could not refinance, forcing a pre-packaged Chapter 11 to restructure senior secured tranches.

Technical baselines

Basic acumen is tested to filter unprepared applicants; absolute accuracy and structural clarity win.

A company has a $10 million increase in depreciation at a 30% tax rate. Walk me through all three statements.

What they test. Accounting flows and the tax shield

Weak answer. Net income goes down $10 million and cash goes down.

Strong answer. Pre-tax income falls $10 million; at 30% tax, net income falls $7 million. On the cash flow statement net income is down $7 million but you add back the $10 million non-cash depreciation, a net cash increase of $3 million. On the balance sheet, cash is up $3 million and PP&E down $10 million, so assets are down $7 million, matching the $7 million fall in retained earnings.

How do DIP financing and structural seniority function during a restructuring?

What they test. Credit and distress fundamentals

Role-specific scenarios and curveballs

Situational judgment plus poise: they screen for ownership and the ability to simplify and stay composed.

You find a glaring formatting error in a pitchbook already sent to a client. What do you do?

What they test. Ownership and professional maturity

Strong answer. Immediately notify the Associate, present a clean corrected version and an updated PDF, take full ownership, and put a multi-point checklist in place for future print runs.

Explain a DCF or an LBO to a 10-year-old.

What they test. Ability to simplify and stay poised

How it is scored

The Houlihan Lokey HireVue scoring rubric

A hybrid framework: HireVue NLP scans transcripts for technical keywords, structure and vocabulary depth, then HR teams and designated junior bankers review the top-scoring clips for nuance, delivery and executive presence.

Scoring dimensions

  • Structured communication (uses STAR, stays concise)
  • Technical and market readiness (accurate mechanics, commercial awareness)
  • Firm calibration (specific why-HL, not a generic script)
  • Executive polish (eye contact with the lens, confident composure)

Pass rates. A major bottleneck: roughly 15-20% of completers advance.

Response time. As short as 3-7 business days for strong files; generally 1-2 weeks.

Feedback policy. No individual feedback; rejection is an automated email.

Why candidates fail

How candidates lose the Houlihan Lokey HireVue

Specific failure patterns documented across past applicants. Most are avoidable with disciplined preparation.

  1. 1

    Generic bulge-bracket scripts

Reusing boilerplate meant for Goldman or Morgan Stanley and failing to reference HL's middle-market focus or restructuring dominance.

  2. 2

    Poor 90-second time management

Spending 70 seconds on setup and leaving 20 for the actual execution and result, so the core of the answer is rushed.

  3. 3

    Missing the tax shield

Panicking on basic technicals and dropping the tax implications, signaling memorized answers rather than understanding.

  4. 4

Reading visible scripts and weak setup

Eyes tracking a monitor, monotone delivery, or noisy, poorly lit, unprofessional backgrounds.

What works

What separates candidates who pass

Concrete moves drilled by candidates who clear the cut-off, drawn from applicant accounts and recruiter feedback.

  • Structure every answer with STAR

Spend at least half your time on your specific Action and the quantitative Result.

  • Speak to the lens, not the screen

Look directly at the camera aperture to create natural eye contact for the reviewer.

  • Use division-specific terminology

For Restructuring, comfortably reference DIP financing, liquidity runways and debt exchange mechanics.

  • Anchor motivation in real HL deals

Cite specific recent transactions or fairness opinions to prove you follow the firm's activity.

  • Use the 30-second prep to outline

Jot a high-level framework and keep clean keyword sticky notes around the webcam, not full sentences.

From past applicants

How recent Houlihan Lokey candidates approached the HireVue

Anonymised candidate accounts of how recent Houlihan Lokey applicants approached the HireVue. Each covers preparation, the experience, and the outcome.

Financial Restructuring, Summer Analyst, NY (Ivy target)

Prep. Prepped with credit-specific resources so the why-restructuring and out-of-court vs Chapter 11 angles were second nature.

Experience. Received the invite on a Tuesday with 48 hours to complete. Five questions, including a technical prompt on why a distressed company might restructure out of court instead of filing Chapter 11; broke down cost, speed and public-visibility differences while looking at the lens.

Outcome. Invited to a live VP phone interview in under four days.

Corporate Finance, Summer Analyst, Chicago (non-target)

Prep. Knew the application had to be technically flawless to stand out from a Midwest state school.

Experience. Four questions: a behavioral prompt on a heavy workload and a technical one walking a $10 million depreciation change through the three statements at a 30% tax rate, highlighting the tax shield. Set up professional lighting and a clean background.

Outcome. Secured an accelerated Superday spot.

Financial and Valuation Advisory, Summer Analyst, LA

Prep. Comfortable with cognitive logic games and valuation fundamentals.

Experience. Short cognitive logic-game section plus four video prompts; one asked to pitch a sector and apply a DCF to cyclical cash flows. Chose industrial automation, analyzed capex trends and normalized the terminal value for cyclicality, using keyword sticky notes by the webcam.

Outcome. Phone screen invite five business days later.

What gets you through

Five moves that decide the HireVue

  1. 01STAR every behavioural. Situation in one sentence, task in one, action in three, result with a number. The structure is the score.
  2. 02Cut filler words ruthlessly. Three filler words ("um", "you know", "sort of") drops your confidence score by ~6 points. Record yourself, count them, stop them.
  3. 03Use specific numbers. "Led a team" is filler. "Led a 6-person team that delivered £400k of revenue" is signal. Every behavioural needs at least one quantified outcome.
  4. 04Reference Houlihan Lokey concretely. For motivation questions, name a specific deal, a person you spoke to, a division you researched. Generic "I admire the brand" answers are the modal failure mode.
  5. 05Practise on camera, not in your head. Reading answers to yourself is not the same as recording them. Filler words, eye-line, pacing: all only show up when the camera is on.

FAQ

Houlihan Lokey HireVue questions, answered

No. The retake option is disabled across all divisions: you get exactly one attempt per question. If you stumble, do not stop or show frustration. Take a brief pause, compose yourself, and continue with confidence. Once a recording starts it locks and uploads directly to the candidate portal.
