The format

What the PJT Partners HireVue actually looks like

4-5 questions, 30s prep and 90-120s to record each. Use STAR, look into the lens, and tailor every answer to PJT and your chosen division.

Prep timer

30 seconds of preparation once the text prompt appears; the camera is not recording during prep.

Recording

90 seconds (1.5 minutes) to 120 seconds (2 minutes) per answer, depending on complexity.

Scoring

An automated transcription and keyword-matching pass for an initial filter, then human review by RSSG and Strategic Advisory junior bankers and the HR recruiting team; PJT does not extend superday invitations on an AI score alone.

Invitation timing. Sent after the resume filter and Suited assessment, usually February-March; early applicants can receive the link within 24-72 hours of submitting.

Completion window. A strict 48-72 hour completion window from the invitation; extensions are rare and missing it triggers an automatic rejection.

Retake policy. No retakes for any question or the session; once the timer expires or you stop recording, the file locks and uploads.

Volume context. A high-volume digital gate: roughly 30-40% of applicants are invited, and only about 5-8% of those who complete it advance to a first round or superday (final offers are below 1.5% of the pool).

Recent changes. PJT has shifted toward text-to-speech transcription and keyword parsing plus direct human audit, and pairs the HireVue with the Suited behavioral/psychometric screen rather than older facial-tracking iterations.

Question categories

What PJT Partners actually asks, by category

The HireVue rotates across distinct question types. For each, what the firm is screening for, plus a weak answer signal and a strong one drawn from past applicant accounts.

Motivation

PJT screens for hyper-specific institutional alignment, not generic boutique enthusiasm.

Why do you want to build your career at PJT rather than a traditional bulge-bracket institution?

What they test. Specific, researched motivation and understanding of the independent model

Weak answer. PJT is a top elite boutique with great deal flow and a collaborative culture where I can learn from smart people.

Strong answer. I want pure, unconflicted advice unbundled from a balance sheet, and PJT lean deal teams mean accelerated accountability. I follow the firm liability-management work, and I would rather analyze capital structures and credit agreements than process routine financing.

What draws you to Restructuring and Special Situations (RSSG) over Strategic Advisory?

What they test. Clear divisional preference

Strong answer. A genuine preference for analyzing capital structures and credit agreements over standard enterprise-value work, plus the intellectual challenge of fixing a broken balance sheet under distress.

Explain how our boutique model adds unique value to a client undergoing severe liquidity distress.

What they test. Understanding of independent advisory value

Behavioral / competency

Screening for operational resilience, attention to detail and emotional intelligence under pressure.

Describe a time you managed a high-stakes project on an extremely compressed timeline. How did you allocate resources?

What they test. Prioritization and composure

Weak answer. A disorganized narrative that spends most of the time on context and leaves little for the actual resolution.

Strong answer. A tight STAR answer that spends most time on your specific action and a metric-driven result (for example, cut the error rate 15% and submitted six hours ahead of deadline).

Give an example of a significant analytical mistake you made. How did you identify and fix it?

What they test. Accountability

Resume walkthrough

Walk me through your resume, highlighting the inflection points that led you to apply to PJT.

What they test. A cohesive 90-second narrative, not a chronological recitation

Strong answer. A tight story that frames each transition purposefully and concludes with why PJT is the logical next step.

Commercial awareness

Pitch me a recent high-profile M&A transaction PJT did not advise on. Why did it make strategic sense?

What they test. Genuine market tracking

Weak answer. A generic tech acquisition discussed superficially with no multiples or capital-structure detail.

Strong answer. A transaction walked through with precise vocabulary: forward EBITDA multiples, premium, funding mix (cash vs debt) and regulatory risk.

How are sustained higher interest rates driving the current wave of liability management exercises?

What they test. Macro-credit intuition

Technical

PJT drops core technicals into the digital round to filter unprepared candidates quickly.

If a company incurs $100 of additional depreciation, walk through all three statements with a 20% tax rate.

What they test. Accounting links under time pressure

Strong answer. Operating income falls $100; at a 20% rate net income falls $80; on the cash flow statement add back the $100 non-cash charge so cash rises $20; on the balance sheet cash is up $20 and PP&E down $100, so assets fall $80, matched by retained earnings down $80.

Why is enterprise value unaffected when a company issues $100M of equity to pay down $100M of debt?

What they test. EV mechanics

Role-specific scenarios and curveballs

A senior MD asks for a valuation, but you find a critical formula error in the team master model. What do you do?

What they test. Judgment and hierarchy

Strong answer. Verify the error, draft the fix, and communicate transparently up the chain (the associate first) rather than bypassing seniority or stalling.

Describe a complex financial concept to me as if I were a ten-year-old.

What they test. Cognitive flexibility and true mastery

Strong answer. Pick a clear analogy and commit: explaining WACC as the interest a parent charges a child to borrow money for a lemonade stand shows you understand the concept, not just the formula.

How it is scored

The PJT Partners HireVue scoring rubric

An automated transcription and keyword-matching pass for an initial filter, then human review by RSSG and Strategic Advisory junior bankers and the HR recruiting team; PJT does not extend superday invitations on an AI score alone.

Scoring dimensions

  • Communication structure and presence (confidence, eye contact, minimal filler)
  • Technical and institutional competence (accurate concepts, clear business terminology)
  • Institutional intent (tailored to PJT, not a generic template)
  • Problem-solving and composure on unexpected prompts

Pass rates. Roughly 20-30% of HireVue completers clear this stage.

Response time. Passes frequently hear within 3-7 business days; rejections can take several weeks as the firm manages pipeline capacity.

Feedback policy. No individual feedback given the volume.

Why candidates fail

How candidates lose the PJT Partners HireVue

Specific failure patterns documented across past applicants. Most are avoidable with disciplined preparation.

  1. 1

    Generic corporate scripts

Find-and-replace answers reused from a bulge-bracket application are easy for human reviewers to spot.

  2. 2

    Poor eye contact

Staring at a second screen or notes rather than the lens makes the delivery feel artificial.

  3. 3

    Not distinguishing the divisions

Describing standard cross-border M&A while interviewing for a dedicated restructuring seat shows a misunderstanding of the role.

  4. 4

    Poor time allocation

Over-investing in background context forces you to rush or get cut off before the action and result.

What works

What separates candidates who pass

Concrete moves drilled by candidates who clear the cut-off, drawn from applicant accounts and recruiter feedback.

  • Look into the lens

Direct camera eye contact creates natural engagement for the reviewer.

  • Structure with STAR

Spend the majority of each behavioral answer on your action and the quantifiable result.

  • Reference a real PJT mandate

Naming a specific recent deal or liability-management exercise proves you track the firm.

  • Submit early when finished

If you have fully answered in 75 of 90 seconds, hit submit rather than padding to the buzzer.

From past applicants

How recent PJT Partners candidates approached the HireVue

Anonymised candidate accounts of how recent PJT Partners applicants approached the HireVue. Each covers preparation, the experience, and the outcome.

Strategic Advisory, Summer Analyst (target university, New York)

Prep. Practiced behavioral answers with a mock recorder and researched recent PJT mandates.

Experience. The HireVue link arrived 48 hours after applying. One question asked about a recent PJT-advised M&A deal; having researched it, I spoke to the advisory role and the valuation premium, and I looked straight at the lens instead of my own video.

Outcome. Received a superday invitation exactly four days later.

Restructuring & Special Situations (RSSG), non-target university

Prep. Studied restructuring interview guides to build a strong technical base.

Experience. Five questions, more technical than my bulge-bracket HireVues. One asked how a sustained high-rate environment affects a maturity wall and the choice between an out-of-court exchange and Chapter 11; I walked through credit agreements, DIP financing and bank debt versus high-yield, keeping answers structured around key terms.

Outcome. Advanced past the HireVue to a live interview.

What gets you through

Five moves that decide the HireVue

  1. 01STAR every behavioural. Situation in one sentence, task in one, action in three, result with a number. The structure is the score.
  2. 02Cut filler words ruthlessly. Three filler words ("um", "you know", "sort of") drops your confidence score by ~6 points. Record yourself, count them, stop them.
  3. 03Use specific numbers. "Led a team" is filler. "Led a 6-person team that delivered £400k of revenue" is signal. Every behavioural needs at least one quantified outcome.
  4. 04Reference PJT Partners concretely. For motivation questions, name a specific deal, a person you spoke to, a division you researched. Generic "I admire the brand" answers are the modal failure mode.
  5. 05Practise on camera, not in your head. Reading answers to yourself is not the same as recording them. Filler words, eye-line, pacing: all only show up when the camera is on.
